I was told the other day that in life there are no black and whites, only shades of grey. The person teaching me this valuable lesson went on to say that only children believe in a black and white world. Apparently once we become adults we realize the truth.
What if the kids have it right? What if things really are black and white and the grey is only created by us?
Many times I think that we simply dilute the truth of our bad decisions and actions until we can justify them to fit our own version of morality. I know that I am guilty of just that. We discuss and argue and talk around an issue until it is impossible to see the difference between right and wrong. If we talk long enough, can we remove those absolutes?
The truth is, those absolutes of black and white are always there. They are the constant reminder of the reality behind our web of justifications and educated arguments and grown-up talk.
Morality is a tricky thing for most people. (I am no exception.) You can talk forever about greys and never approach an answer to your questions, or you can search for truth. The real question is...do you want to find it?
